What Is A Virtual Assistant And How Did I Become One

Updated: Jul 8

I became a Virtual Assistant back in Summer 2019. I started out as a business consultant wanting to help others in their businesses, in addition to working on my graphic design, communications, and crafts as a hobby. Through helping others with their businesses, I found that there was a lot more that I could offer entrepreneurs and I loved to help others grow their businesses and make their visions and goals that they had for themselves a reality. It was fun, it was exciting, and aligned with all the creative things I loved and what I do in my professional career.

Because I enjoyed it so much I began to learn new skills, increase my knowledge of communication by obtaining my Master of Science in Communication with three certifications (Strategic Communication, Organizational Communication, and Social and New Media Management), and officially expanded my business to a Virtual Assistant and Consulting business in order to offer a full experience and range of services.

This is a great opportunity to mention that if you are looking for an amazing educational experience or specifically a Master of Science in Communication degree, the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater has a phenomenal program! I attended for my undergraduate and graduate career and I could not be more proud to be a Warhawk! Go Warhawks!

Now, that being said, for the past four years I have fully operated my business part time as a Virtual Assistant and Consultant bringing on clients from every background and field, with some amazing businesses and stories.

If you’re following my social media pages (Facebook; Instagram; Twitter (X)) you’ve seen the reviews and the content, and you’re probably wondering what exactly is a Virtual Assistant and what do I do? Let’s dive in!

WHAT IS A VIRTUAL ASSISTANT

A Virtual Assistant (VA) is a freelancer who provides services remotely, which means they work from anywhere! If you like to travel, you can bring your laptop along and work on the road. If you prefer to work from home on the sofa, in your home office, or at a coffee shop, you can do that too!

WHAT DOES A VIRTUAL ASSISTANT DO

This is a question I get asked all the time and one I love to answer because being a VA is so freeing and really allows you to do things that align with your interests and your talents. You can literally do almost anything!

Now think about it, how many times have you been working on a hobby or craft of yours that you enjoy and said, “I should find a way to monetize this,” or you have found yourself constantly helping individuals on the same kind of tasks.

As a VA, you can choose the industry you work in, the clients you work with, and the types of services you offer, such as general administrative work or a specialized niche directed at a specific professional field. Some VA’s even choose to offer services that align to what they do in their professional career.

Essentially, what this looks like is the opportunity to offer services that are administrative, creative, technical, or a mixture of these. Just to give you a few ideas of things you can offer:

  • Administrative services

  • Social media management

  • Content creation

  • Editing and proofreading services

  • Web design, development, and maintenance

  • Graphic art

  • Blog writing

  • Writing and scheduling emails

  • Customer service support

  • Podcast management

  • Transcription

  • Video and audio editing

  • Book formatting

  • Bookkeeping

  • Project management

  • Document editing

And so much more . . . .

The opportunities are truly endless when you become a VA and filled with so much learning and growth potential.
